Eight cars attended The Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod for round one of the 2011 Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator series. Amongst their ranks were two cars new to the series....
Andy Bond’s Mustang -

and Gerry Treit’s fresh out 1940 Willys coupe -

Thanks to excellent weather and limited track down time the teams ran a total of eight qualifying sessions with only the Mustang of Richard Billings failing to make it through to the elimination rounds. At the end of qualifying Brian Payne’s Mustang (8.75) was in top spot, with Alex McIntosh’s Mustang (8.81) second and Dave Murdoch’s Willys (8.93) third.
Despite having a bye in round one Brian Payne still cut the mustard with an 8.52 second pass, and despite a 9.53 from Ron Haslett’s revamped Cortina Estate it was Dave Murdoch who went through with a time of 9.03. Andy Bond ran a new personal best of 9.08 in his Mustang to defeat Stuart Williams’ Toyota Supra, and Gerry Treit’s weekend best of 10.22 was no match for Alex McIntosh’s 8.72.
Round two saw Dave Murdoch line up alongside Alex McIntosh on the start line and the two cars were still virtually side by side as they crossed the finish line – McIntosh’s 8.95 being just enough to pip Murdoch’s 8.99. Brian Payne’s 8.36 saw him through to the final as well.
The two Mustangs lined up for the final but Alex McIntosh was somewhat off the money, a leisurely 11.82 being no match for a consistent Brian Payne whose 8.28 saw him take the honours with ease.
